چکیده

During the 1990s, the sustainable management of the forests issue has begun to attract the world’s attention, therefore, some forest management certifications started and began to spread to worldwide. In 1999, for the first time, in Maine, the USA, there was another kind of third party certification program called Maine Master Logger Certification (MLC) being established for loggers by local loggers. This program is not focus on the forest management but on the environmental performances of the loggers in the woods. After more than a decade this program has been raising the bar of the whole industry and inspiring the establishments of the same kind of programs in nearly 30 states. By interviewing the key men involved in the creation of this program and the organization who conducts this program nowadays, this study is to clarify the development of this program and to find out the factors which supported it. The author concludes that: 1Loggers, the logging professionals, eagerly wanted to create an evaluating system to evaluate their works in the woods by themselves, and that was the motivation to start this program. 2With the growing environmental awareness, some certified forest products began to own their markets, and these kind of markets helped this program spread. 3There are plenty of small scale private owned lands in Maine, most of which are not certified by any forest management certification. To these land owners, the MLC plays a role as a substitute for forest management certifications to protect the environment, and this helps the program spread too. A1

Effect of grafting on growth, performance and yield of aubergine (Solanum melongena L.) in greenhouse and open-field

Seedlings of aubergine (Solanum melongena L.) cv. ‘Rima’ were used as scion (R) and control (non-grafted) and rootstock (self-grafted) (RR), while two hybrid tomatoes ‘Heman’ (Lycopersicon hirsutm) and ‘Primavera’ (Lycopersicon esculentum) were used as rootstocks. Grafted and non-grafted plants were grown in the greenhouse and in the open-field. Grafted plants Rima and Heman (RH) were more vigo...

Fruit quality, antioxidant capacity, and flavonoid content of organically and conventionally grown blueberries.

The effect of cultivation practices on fruit quality and antioxidant capacity in highbush blueberries var. Bluecrop (Vaccinium corymbosum L.) was evaluated from random samples of commercial late harvest fields in New Jersey. Results from this study showed that blueberry fruit grown from organic culture yielded significantly higher sugars (fructose and glucose), malic acid, total phenolics, tota...

Thermoeconomic analysis of reducing exergy losses in greenhouses with hydroponic cultivation system through drainage recycling and formation of water quality pyramid

Employing non-conventional water resources using treatment and recycling is considered as the main resource in addressing future water scarcity. Although non-conventional water recycling has been investigated in details in the literature, its impacts on irrigation-fertilizing systems have not been discussed using thermoeconomic analysis.  In this case study, using a hydroponic greenhouse system...

Effect of different salinity levels on physiological characteristics, phenylalanine ammonia lyase activity and some flavonoid compounds in hydroponic cultivation of saffron (Crocus sativus L.)

The use of salt tolerant plants in arid and semi-arid regions of the world, including Iran, is one of the ways to achieve high yields. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of different salinity treatments in hydroponic culture on physiological characteristics, phenylalanine-ammonialyase (PAL) activity and also the small amount of flavonoid compounds kaepmferol and quercetin in fi...

اثر شوری و نیتروژن بر کیفیت میوه و غلظت عناصر کم مصرف گوجه‌فرنگی در کشت هیدروپونیک

Salinity plays an important role in the reduction of tomato growth, especially in arid and semi-arid regions. Nitrogen (N) may increase tomato tolerance to salt stress by increasing plant growth. In order to investigate the interaction effect of salinity and nitrogen on tomato growth, fruit quality, and micronutrient concentration in tomato plants, a hydroponic experiment was conducted in a com...
